 Shekhavati is located in northern part of Rajasthan and is the semi arid region. The region stands in the triangle between Delhi-Bikaner-Jaipur. ‘Bankidas ki khyat’ was the first book in which Shekhavati was first mentioned and the history of the region was first jotted down by Col James Tod. The name of the place has been used several times in ‘vamsh bhaskar’ which signifies its existence some two and a half centuries back. The name of Shekhavati is derived from Rao Shekha Ji who was the chieftain of Rajput Kachhwaha. But Hakim Yusuf Jhunjhunuvi has another view point about the origin of the word. As per him, the region derives it name from the Persian language word called ‘Sheekh’, means ‘Sand deposited on the coastal area of sea’.
Many maginificent forts have been built by Shekhawats in their Thikanas. There are around fifity palaces and forts in Shekhavati built by its Rajas. Many of them have been converted to hotels now days. Some of the finest architecture of that time include Castle Mandawa, built in 1755 by Thakur Nawal Singh Bahadur, Roop Niwas Kothi which is popularly known as “Rawal Sab Ki Kothi,” Dundlod Fort which dates back to 1750 AD, Surajgarh Fort, Castle Pachar, Narain Niwas Castle, Mukundgarh Fort and Arooka Castle. Other tourist attractions in Shekhavati include Horse Safaris, The Heritage on Wheels and Fairs and Festivals like Teej, Gangaur and Dashehra.
