 Ratnagiri is located 100 kilometers from Bhubaneshwar airport and the district is a part of Konkan. There is profound rainfall in the place which results in highly eroded landscape but the fertile alluvial region produces plentiful rice, cashew nuts, coconuts and fruits, luscious "Hapus" mangoes being the main fruit among other important and delicious fruits. The key trade in Ratnagiri is fishing. In the year 1731, Ratnagiri was ruled by Satara kings and subsequently the control went to British govt. in 1818. This is a place where ruling British cramped the last emperor of Burma, Thibaw and later a freedom fighter, V.D. Savarkar. As per the legend, Pandavas, after the 12 years of exile settled at the surrounding area of Ratnagiri for a while in the 13th year.
