Rajgir is located around 15 kilometers from Nalanda and the word means 'house of the king'. It is a sacred place of Buddhists. Rajgir is the place where the first Buddhist Council was held after the Nirvana of Buddha. Lord Buddha lived here for many years and delivered sermons. The favorite residence of Buddha was the Jivekarmavan monastery. This place also has many enthralling sightseeing. The ruins of Rajgir cover a wide-range area of the remains of stupas, shrines, monasteries and habitants. Ropeway is another attraction of Rajgir which takes uphill to Monasteries and Shanti Stupa. Rajgir is also well known for its warm water ponds which contain medicinal properties and helps in curing many skin diseases. The place also has many stunning Jain and Hindu temples which attracts many Jains and Hindus here.
Hot Springs, Griddhakuta or Vulture’s Peak, Jain Temples, Venuvana and Pippala Cave are the major pilgrimage attractions of Rajgir. Other attractions of Rajgir include Malamasa Mela, Rajgir Dance Festival and Makar Sankranti. The nearest airport is in Patna which is 107 kms from the place.
