Port Blair
Port Blair is a municipal council in the Andaman district and the capital of Andaman and Nicobar Islands. It comprises of 572 islets, islands and rocks, among which only thirty-eight islands are populated. These islands stretch from north to south, forming around 700 kilometers. These islands provide a wonderful tropical ecstasy but are yet to be touched by the modern amenities of life. As per the legend, the Island was used as torture cell by the Britishers against the Indians who fought in opposition to British Raj in India. Due to this, this place was known as 'kala pani' and the prisoners brought here were never seen by their families.
Port Blair attracts thousands of tourists every year. The Island has more than forty-six species of mammals, 242 species of birds and seventy-eight species of reptiles. The population at this place is around 3 lakhs and majority depends upon the tourist for the livelihood. The tiny zoo and zoological park which offers variety of wildlife species are very popular among the tourists as well as locals.
