 Periyar covers an extensive area of over 777 km² and is famous for its National Park and Tiger Reserve, which covers 350 km². The place is the home for nearly sixty-two different types of mammal and many are dangerous ones as well. Apart from tigers, other mammals are Indian elephants, mouse deer, sambar, gaur, Dholes, barking deer, leopards and mongoose. One can enjoy the chirping of 320 varieties of birds which include cormorants, darters, the great Malabar hornbill and kingfishers. 27 kinds of Amphabians and forty-five kinds of reptiles have also been recorded. King Cobra and Python are also trekked by the tourist many times.
The Periyar River is also very famous and is known as The Lifeline of Kerala. The river is the longest one in the entire state of Kerala covering a length of 244 kilometers. It is among the few rivers to flow entirely in the state. Periyar could be reached by railways, roadways and airways. The nearest railway is in Kottayam, 114 kilometers from the place. Periyar could be reached by road from Kumily which is well connected with Ernakulam, Kottayam and Madurai. The tourist can also fly to Kochi or Madurai which are close to Periyar.
